WELCOME TO CREATIVE EMOTIONS!
Creative Emotions results from comprehensive research on associations between Emotions, Image, and Music characteristics.

By making this dataset available through a website and a JSON file, we hope other researchers, designers, or curious minds can easily access this research and create emotion-sensitive design artifacts.

Examples of projects performed with this dataset can be consulted on the Demonstration page.

This dataset is available in two open-source formats, as JSON or as PDF file. Although with different purposes, each format allows you to explore and use the dataset in your project.

The structure inside the JSON file can be accessed by typing the “ed” variable in the browser console. The information is organized like this: ed > domain > levels > properties > emotions. For example, in the Music domain, there is a level called Harmony Melody. This level has a property named Sonance, which in turn, contains a value called Harmony Consoant. Further, this value is associated with several Emotions, such as, Happiness.

Music > Harmony Melody > Harmony Consoant > Happiness.

The JSON file also allows us to directly access the level of information desired. We can access a property and see all associated emotions or access an emotion and see all associated properties. Generally speaking, we can search up (bottom-up) and down (top-down) the information tree.
DOCUMENTATION
We are a group of Computational Design researchers at CISUC, University of Coimbra. Through this website, we hope that other researchers, designers or curious minds can easily access the results of an extensive auditory-visual associations research and create emotion-sensitive design artefacts.

Creative Emotions results from this research and is a digital tool to aid in the exploration of relationships between Emotions, Image and Music. The present webpage contains a cross-modal dataset that can be navigated from “top down” or “bottom up” perspectives (see more in Creative Emotions page). “Top-down” search, begins in the properties that compose a music or image, followed by the values of each property and its emotion associated. “Bottom up” search, begins in a list of emotions common to music and image domains , followed by the values associated to each emotion of the list.

Note that all the properties considered to be perceptually more relevant in the representation of emotions are marked with a cross “✢”. Additionally, we provide a JSON file (see more in Documentation page) containing this dataset, ready to be used in upcoming projects.

DOMAINS COLUMN

The present dataset can be explored in three ways:
(i) by Image-Emotions Associations (ii) Music-Emotions Associations, and, (ii) through emotions and their associations to both Image and Music properties/values.

Image and Music “domains'' were organized into distinct perceptual groups labeled as “levels”.

PROPERTIES COLUMN

Each domain, Image and Music, has a set of “properties” and “values” associated to them.

The “✢” symbol highlights the most perceptually relevant properties, a result extracted from the analysis of works aimed at this research.

VALUES COLUMN

Each property has a set of values that allow a better understanding one the elements that compose each property.
